Employee Recognition Awards

Leeward Community College offers various award initiatives to recognize and celebrate the excellence of our faculty, lecturers and staff. Nominations are accepted from January 1 through February 29 for the current academic year. The deadline for all nominations is 4:30 pm on February 29. Details for each award are listed below.

Library

The Library provides quality resources and services including online and print resources, computers and equipment, research assistance and support, and study spaces across two floors of the Learning Commons building.

Tutoring

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) and Writing Center offer free support for Leeward CC content courses and writing assignments. Our peer tutors are fellow students who are also available to help with scholarship essays and college success skills (including Laulima, OER, time management, organization, note-taking, and reading).

Board of Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching

Awarded by the Board of Regents as tribute to faculty members who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity and personal values that benefit students as evidenced by professional activities and institutional service.

Leeward Outstanding Lecturer Award

Awarded by the College as tribute to Leeward lecturers who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, creative and effective teaching practice, and personal values as evidenced by engagement and activities that benefit students.

Eligibility: Any lecturer currently teaching at least 3 credits per semester during the academic year. Previous recipients are not eligible (see list of past awardees).

Leeward Outstanding Service Award

Awarded by the College to recognize a Leeward civil service or APT employee for outstanding demonstrated work performance, service, leadership and/or fostering of excellence in higher education.

Eligibility: Any full-time civil service or APT employee who has been employed continuously for not less than twelve (12) consecutive months at Leeward CC. Any employee previously nominated may be renominated provided the employee has not been chosen as a recipient of this award within the last five (5) years

Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award

Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Career and Technical Education rewards outstanding achievement and significant contribution to vocational and technical education by a community college faculty member or student. The award was established by family members to honor the namesakes’ role, as owners of the Chikara Foods Company, in the development of the food industry in Hawai‘i.

The Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award will be awarded on alternate years; even years to a faculty member, and odd years to a student who makes a significant contribution to career and technical education within the University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges.

Eligibility: Faculty or students with a record of service within the University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges’ career and technical education programs. Alternating (odd years student, even years faculty) 2021: student; 2022: faculty

Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching

The Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching recognizes dedication and demonstrated excellence as teachers of undergraduate students. It was established as a memorial to the late Frances Davis, who taught mathematics at Leeward Community College and UH Manoa for 19 years.

Leeward Excellence in Online Teaching Award

Awarded by the College to recognize a Leeward Community College faculty or lecturer who teaches an online course that recognizes innovation and excellence in technology-supported teaching, academic collaboration, and student engagement.

Eligibility: Any faculty or lecturer who teaches an online course at Leeward CC (no hybrid courses, please). (A faculty or lecturer who previously applied may re-apply provided he/she has not been chosen as a recipient of this award within the last five (5) years.)
