Leadership Excellence Program (LEP)
The LEP is an 18-month program that prepares faculty/staff for leadership roles by providing personal and professional growth opportunities via self-reflection and real-world leadership experiences in the context of higher education. By the end of the program, participants will be able to:
- Model the qualities that are valued as a leader at Leeward Community College.
- Identify their own strengths and areas of improvement, especially as it pertains to their leadership abilities.
- Apply the necessary policies, procedures, and practices associated with developing and implementing an initiative with campus-wide impact.
- Recognize various leadership styles and nuances with the intent to develop and/or refine their own leadership identity.
- Identify the latest trends and practices necessary to inform effective leadership practices.

Applicant Criteria and Selection Process
Applicant Criteria
- Faculty, staff, and long-term lecturers are eligible to apply.
- Applicants must be available to fully participate throughout the entire 18-month term in order to be considered.
- Applicants should have some demonstrated leadership experience and/or leadership potential and will be reviewed for consideration using the process below.
Selection Process
- Self-Nominate – application and approval of supervisor required.
- Each cohort will consist of approximately four to six participants.
- Application announcements are sent to the campus email listserve and posted in the Leeward Bulletin. LEP Graduates and LEP Advisors are reviewers in the selection process.

Cohort 6: September 2022 – December 2023 (January convocation culminating activity)
Their project focused on taking a deeper dive into the data of our students who are are academic warning in their first semester. Reviewing longitudinal data helped to reveal who are our students in trouble and determine best ways to develop Early Alert supports.

Their project was a campuswide leadership perception survey and the result was a comprehensive report and presentation to administration on recommendations to foster leadership growth and development opportunities on campus.

Cohort 3: August 2017 – December 2018
Their project was called “Students First” and designed to provide a “Student Mystery Shopper” experience for non-instructional units which would give them service feedback. LEP members created a report as well as met with participating units to develop response plans and provide consultation, especially as it pertained to supporting the campus WIG (Wildly Important Goal) to “Keep the Students We Have”.

Their project was to review, revise, administer, and report the results of an Employee Satisfaction Survey (similar to that conducted in 2011 and 2014). This project could also include open forums or other avenues of gathering feedback.

True Colors
For over four decades, the True Colors temperament and personality typing program has been helping people to improve professional and personal relationships. This training program teaches participants how to recognize, understand, and appreciate what their colleagues value and how they communicate.
The ICTL offers True Colors training to any Leeward CC unit or division. Contact Erin Thompson for more information or to schedule a training.
