Distance Education (DE) Guidelines Repository
Leeward’s Educational Media Center (EMC) is pleased to provide a supplemental DE Guidelines Repository to assist instructors with using Leeward’s DE Guidelines for quality course design. Whether you’re just getting started with distance education or are revising your online course to meet the DE Guidelines, we’ve got you covered!

About the DE Guidelines
The Leeward CC Distance Education (DE) Guidelines were developed in 2019 by the DE Committee to promote best practices in online course design and facilitation. The DE Guidelines address six key areas of effective distance learning practice and are based on several state and nationally recognized standards.
Meeting the DE Guidelines could also mean that your DE course is “Ready for Delivery” (“RFD”) if it successfully passes a course review. “RFD” at Leeward is a special designation for fully online courses that align to the DE Guidelines. Similar to a “badge” of distinction, “RFD” indicates to prospective students, Leeward administrators, and/or outside agencies that a Leeward distance education course has been reviewed according to the DE Guidelines (or comparable) and conferred an quality online course.

DE Guidelines Suggestions, Samples, and Additional Resources
There are six DE Guidelines comprised of 35 sub-guidelines. You’ll find suggestions on how to meet the sub-guidelines, samples from Leeward instructors, and additional resources. We hope these various examples of how instructors choose to approach their DE courses may provide some insight or inspiration on how to work toward meeting the DE Guidelines.
Please feel free to use or pick-and-choose from the suggestions listed under each sub-guideline that works for your course and teaching style.
